Project update
Progress report
- Goals met: Successfully completed first round of research initiatives for each sub-group. These include:
- Pump team: designed and tested seat, revised pump entranceway, prototyped new handle extension, completed blueprints for pump superstructure designed for people with disabilities, researched India Mark II pump and options for camera monitoring of a pump site in Mali
- Latrine team: designed latrine seats for the disabled, had prototypes made of metal, wood, and clay fabricated and tested in Mali, investigated different building materials for latrine structures, researched devices to assist in the pouring of water, ordered construction of prototype latrine in Mali.
- Water transport team: designed prototype baskets for jerry cans, had metal and cloth prototypes manufactured and tested in Mali, commissioned materials engineering class to work on methods of welding and reshaping plastics for modifications to jerry cans and buckets.
- Statistics team: analyzed report from Handicap International, results TBD
Status assessment
- Over the next year we plan to bring the design/testing/re-design phase of our project to a close. Our last trip will be in May 2009, so all testing should be complete by that point.
Work needed
- Pump team: Fall 2008, complete revision of blueprints and handle extension based on recommendations from the June trip. Spring 2009, begin thorough documentation of past and present work, in view of December 2009 presentation.
- Latrine team: Fall 2008, continue work on outdoors durability of latrine chairs using locally available materials, continue developing and testing ideas for blind technology and latrine floor improvements based on site team results.
- Water transport team: Fall 2008, start work on new designs of jerry can baskets based on May/June team findings. Implement use of natural fiber cord and wood. Spring 2009, research and develop plan to distribute water transport design ideas throughout Mali.

Personnel team member good with organization
- Assist in organizing documents and pictures, by subteam when applicable
Time line
TBD pending May/June trip results
Personnel
- We need to focus on recruitment of engineering majors, especially for the re-design of the bucket-tipper and improved latrine access for the blind.
- The latrine team has 3 graduating seniors, which will cause a significant decrease in the size. Recruitment or shifting of project members will be considered.
- All our advisors plan to stay with the project.
Facilities
- The project has had difficulty this year finding a workspace on Monday nights, but has tentatively settled in F343. A permanent space should be found, preferably closer to our partner project, Mobility.
Housekeeping
- Have you updated your project article? -
- Have you updated project photographs on the cumulus database? -
Budget
Site team trip expenses, miscellaneous expenses for materials and research items throughout the year.
Grant from the Hilton Foundation
- More detailed budget TBD, probably
