David Vader

Position

Director of The Collaboratory

History

David grew up in Montgomery County, MD with his parents and three sisters. He is a fourth generation only son, third generation handball player, and second generation educator/administrator. David met Ariela, his wife, in high school chemistry class. They were married in 1981, and their children are Emily, Daniel, and Nathan. He received his B.S. degree from Texas A&M University, and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Purdue University, all in mechanical engineering. For five years David worked in IBM’s Advanced Thermal Laboratory in Poughkeepsie, NY, where he co-authored numerous US Patents and other invention disclosures on cooling technologies for electronic packages. He came to Messiah College in 1993 and was Chairperson of the Department of Engineering from 1997 to 2004. In 1999-2001, he was the Clarence Hottel Chair of Engineering at Messiah College, a two-year endowed scholarship chair that enabled him to develop international service-learning opportunities with his students. The Technology Council of Pennsylvania named him co-winner with Dr. Donald Pratt of the 2001 Post-Secondary Educator of the Year Award for co-founding the Collaboratory. In 2001 he received the Dr. Robert and Marilyn Smith Award for outstanding teaching, and in 2002 and 2007 the Barnabas Award for service leadership, both from Messiah College. With his students he has developed and implemented technologies in support of Christian missions and development work. He has also written and made presentations on service-learning as a means of developing professional excellence in students and mentoring them toward lives of servant-leadership. David is especially thankful for the opportunity he has at Messiah College to prepare Christian students to love God and share the Gospel of Jesus by using their academics and professional abilities to serve others, especially those suffering poverty and persecution.
