Discussion

  1. What are the opportunities and challenges for the Collaboratory to connect with SHONS academic departments?
    • Right now the specificity of our project areas is put in place to control growth and make it sustainable
    • The Collaboratory likes a faculty advisor from the school for each of the projects
    • The Collaboratory model works currently because of the large amount of time put in by faculty advisors
      • Before branching out the Collaboratory, it may be good to address the time commitment issue by faculty
    • SHONS is also academically scripted for course loading similar to Engineering
    • Transitioning from one model to another involves a lot of work
    • The Collaboratory helps to connect the dots between semesters and classes
      • SHONS has done this a bit already with trips by individual professors
      • Collab is trying to integrate academics and faith at an even greater level than is currently happening
      • IPC may not be the best model for all departments and majors
      • Brian Nejmeh begins his projects in a class and then continues the project once the course is over
      • What if Gen Ed's were connected into Collaboratory curriculum?
      • Discussion of possible models may be good
    • Academic rigor is important for projects and service
      • However, be careful that service is not just based on a grade/reward
    • Paperwork can be a detriment to project development
      • It takes time and energy which can be in short supply
      • What can be streamlined in paperwork?
        • If a project doesn't fit with a group, a whole lot of work is required to put it in place
      • These extra layers add to current faculty loads
    • Growth forces more order and structure
      • Less volunteer time will be available and more paid positions will be necessary with so much extra work
    • What are the costs and benefits?
      • The benefits need to outweigh the costs
      • Not understanding how much work is necessary to sustain a system can make people less willing to fill out paperwork
    • Not everyone needs to be part of the Collaboratory
    • The Collab needs to be able to present its benefits
      • Crosscultural training
      • Academic engagement
      • etc...
    • Part of the paperwork source exists from the College
      • The purpose of most of the Collab paperwork is for quality assurance (David)
  2. In the new school, what type of projects would be possible in an applied sense?
    • Some of the less "applied sciences" can have roles on applied projects
    • The difference between "applied" and "pure" sciences should be held lightly
      • The distinction is not necessarily important
    • Research projects can provide an opportunity for some of the "pure" sciences
  3. What will the connection with M&B look like?
    • Lack of change in location will help to sustain the connection
    • History of connection will be helpful in sustaining the connection
    • M&B is too important to the sustainability of projects to let it go
    • It is very important for students from M&B to remain involved
      • This will help to keep faculty involved
