Grace Mission to Haiti's new building

Summary

The Haiti Power Project is a project of the Energy group which will provide reliable electrical power for a mission site in Haiti, is tentatively being scheduled for the 2008-09 academic year with installation in January of 2010. While the site will have a diesel generator to provide backup power, Grace Mission would like to avoid using it as much as possible as the cost of diesel continues to rise.

A packet describing the vision and future plans for the Grace Mission is available here: Introductory Packet

  • The Haiti J10 task calendar is available here

Purpose statement

  • The purpose of this project is to provide for the electrical needs of the site using alternative methods to keep operating costs low. The primary source of power will likely be an installation of photovoltaic panels, but at this early stage in the project, wind turbines are also being considered.

Goals

  • Provide all of the power needs of the Grace Mission Conference Center using Renewable sources.
  • System should be easy to maintain by locals or by the occasionally visiting US site teams.
  • Design a potentially expandable system to supply 100% of power to Grace Mission under normal circumstances by fall 2009
  • Install and test system to ensure proper operation in January 2010
  • Educate someone/a team of people permanently on site on the general maintenance of the system so the system can operate with as little outside assistance as possible
  • Create a manual that explains how to properly maintain the system and troubleshoot basic problems by January 2010

History

Initial Meeting Minutes

In Attendance:

Grace Mission to Haiti - Project Child

Close outside of Port-au-Prince, a conference training center. The land was purchased 10-15 years ago. Within the past year, a major fund raising has taken place and construction on the land has begun. With the buildings taking form, a reliable power source is the next step. The project is fully funded through those initial fund raising initiatives.

Long term relationships are crucial to sustainability of the project.
