Purpose
The purpose of Intro to Collab is to give non-members or very new members a quick overview of what the Collaboratory is about and the opportunities available to them.
Planning
The following information covers some of the important aspects to consider when planning this event.
Frequency
This event should happen once a semester. One should occur mid-Fall. the other should occur early-Spring, preferably following Cookies, Cocoa & Community Service which is an opportunities fair for the spring.
Advertising
Advertising for this event can include but is not limited to
- Announcements during the Monday Night Chapel
- Mass email
- Fliers at Cookies, Cocoa & Community Service
Audience
The audience for this event in the past has been mostly non-engineers. It is important to realize this when preparing for the event and the presenter should make an effort to target non-engineers in his/her presentation. It is important to show how non-engineering majors can fit into the Collaboratory and the vital role that they play in the organization.
Time/Location
In the past, the event has occurred at 7pm following the Monday Night Chapel in a classroom or conference room and lasts for 20 minutes.
Itinerary
Some things to highlight in the presentation can include but are not limited to
- Refreshments (eg. cookies, pretzels, chips, soda, etc)
- The Collaboratory video
- Group/project descriptions (in both powerpoint and handout form)
- Annual report/brochure
- Recruiting interest forms
Follow-up
It is important to let group leaders know that this event is happening so they can prepare for any prospective members who may have an interest in their group. It is important to put students with interest in a certain group in contact with that group leader as quickly as possible. The group leader should then have a way to get the student involved and feel ownership in a project.
