Student Leaders

Student Director of the Collaboratory

Additional Qualifications

  • Minimum of two full years of experience in The Collaboratory.
  • Able to commit to a minimum of one full academic year and one summer of service.
  • Able to provide spiritual leadership of The Collaboratory.
  • Good communicator; able to motivate, direct and empower others.
  • Detail oriented: able to track, coordinate and prioritize the details of multiple projects; and adjust priorities on short notice.
  • Completion of the Leadership Development Seminar.
  • Site Team experience highly desirable.

Responsibilities (with the Director of the Collaboratory)

  • Champion the vision, identity and mission of the Collaboratory on campus, especially among student leaders and prospective participants.
  • Chair the Leadership Committee Meetings of the Collaboratory.
  • Develop and oversee leadership development, project management and discipleship programming of the Collaboratory.
  • Coordinate schedule for Monday Night Meetings
  • Assist in developing positive relationships with project and funding partners.
  • Work through the Operations Committee and Leaders Committee to recommend budget and program decisions to the Executive Committee.
  • Develop and maintain organizational policies and processes that serve non-Staff Teams and Groups and enable the Collaboratory to achieve its mission.
  • Coordinate appropriate communication with Collaboratory participants and College Development.
  • Provide a report to the Advisory Board at their annual meeting.
  • Voice privileges on the Coordination Committee; Advise the Director of the Collaboratory on matters that come to the Coordination Committee.
  • Participate in the Messiah College Leadership Summit Program.


Assistant Student Director of the Collaboratory

Additional Qualifications

  • Minimum of one full year of experience in The Collaboratory.
  • Able to commit to a minimum of two full academic years and one summer of service.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Student Director in his/her responsibilities.
  • Set aside time for mentoring and discipleship training with the Student Director.
  • Complete special projects when asked by the Student Director and Director of the Collaboratory.
  • Make preparations for the Service Day lunch for Collaboratory members.
  • Attend and record minutes from Leaders Committee Meeting.
  • Participate in the Messiah College Leadership Summit Program.


Operations Leader

Additional Qualifications

  • Minimum of one full year of experience in the Collaboratory.
  • Ability to commit to a full and preferably two years of service as Operations Leader.
  • Completion of the Leadership Development Seminar.
  • Project management experience.
  • Good communicator; able to motivate, direct and empower others; delegates well.
  • Detail oriented: able to track, coordinate and prioritize the details of multiple projects; and adjust priorities on short notice.
  • Desirable computer skills include MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project; able to update a web page; basic knowledge of video editing desirable.
  • Likes to build friendships and maintain good working relationships with other student leaders, especially the Staff Team Leaders.
  • Site Team experience is desirable.

Responsibilities (with the Manager of the Collaboratory)

  • Manage Team Leaders in the Staff Group to provide Finance, Public Relations, Information Management, Logistics, and Human Resources services in the Collaboratory.
  • Coordinate relations between Staff Team Leaders and their parallel campus offices.
  • Guide the Staff Team Leaders in documenting procedures and updating them for continuous improvement.
  • Assist Team Leaders in peer-mentoring their replacements; peer mentor a new Staff Manager.
  • Advise and support the Director of the Collaboratory in developing the organization and programs of the Collaboratory.
  • Participate in the Messiah College Leadership Summit Program.

Assistant Operations Leader

Additional Qualifications

  • Minimum of one full year of experience in the Collaboratory.
  • Ability to commit to a full two years of service.
  • Attend the Fall Leadership Workshop.
  • Good communicator; able to motivate, direct and empower others; delegates well.
  • Detail oriented: able to track, coordinate and prioritize the details of multiple projects, and adjust priorities on short notice.
  • Desirable computer skills include MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project; able to update a wed page; basic knowledge of video editing software desirable.
  • Likes to build friendships and maintain good working relationships with other student leaders, especially the Staff Team Leaders.
  • Site Team Experience is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Attend Leadership Committee Meetings and Staff Leaders meetings.
  • Support the Staff Manager in his/her projects.
  • Take on special projects as needed.

Group Leader

Additional Qualifications

  • Minimum of one full semester experience in the Collaboratory.
  • Completion of the Leadership Development Class, or commitment to participate in the next available seminar.
  • Good communicator; able to motivate, direct and empower others; delegates well.
  • Completion of any orientation activities particular to the Group.
  • Preference given to members with Team Manager or other project leadership experience.

Additional Responsibilities (With the Group Advisor)

  • Mentor Team Managers.
  • Serve on the Leader's Committee
  • Forward proposals from the Group to the Student Director of the Collaboratory (Collaboratory@messiah.edu) for review and approval.
  • Coordinate Collaboratory administration services and discipleship opportunities for the Group.
  • Provide a brief weekly discipleship and/or instruction activity to nurture and connect members’ Christian faith to their Project work and develop their “soft” project skills.
  • Recruit, usually through opportunities coordinated by HR, new members to replace graduating members of Project Teams and to populate new Teams.
  • Coordinate the production of instructional materials and activities for the orientation of new Group members.
  • Troubleshoot management and personnel development needs of the Group.
  • Coordinate archival record keeping of the Group’s personnel and project data.
  • Update wiki page for group with relevant news and information from recent group activity
  • Responsible for being the point person for the group to the staff.
  • Participate in the Messiah College Leadership Summit Program.

  • Possesses or actively acquiring the special knowledge and competencies needed to lead the Team’s work .

Knowledge/Competency Base

  • Finance Team: accounting.
  • Marketing Team: writing, public speaking, PowerPoint, video editing, graphic design, marketing
  • Logistics: detail oriented, able to track multiple tasks and keep a schedule.
  • Information Management: data base design, web based forms, web page design, on-line collaboration.
  • Human Resources: highly motivated, business management knowledge prefered

Project

Additional Qualifications

  • Minimum of one full semester experience in the Collaboratory.
  • Completion of the Leadership Development Class, or commitment to participate in the next available seminar.
  • Completion of orientation activities particular to the Team.
  • Ability or desire to learn how to manage projects
  • Good communicator; able to motivate, direct and empower others; delegates well.
  • Basic technical knowledge of the Group’s area of work, or a willingness to learn.

Additional Responsibilities (with the Project Team Advisor)

  • Manage the Team: advise and assist personnel to improve their service to the team; coordinate performance feedback; etc.
  • Build and maintain the Team's Semester and Yearly Schedule and Milestones.
  • Plan and run the weekly Team meeting; keep the Project on schedule.
  • Coordinate and compile documentation of the Team’s work.
  • Coordinate requests for presentations of the Team’s work.
  • Liaison to the Client.

Site Team Leader

Additional Qualifications

  • Minimum of one full year of experience in the Collaboratory; has demonstrated exceptional commitment, follow-though, and spiritual maturity.
  • Leader or in mentoring process for leadership in Collaboratory.
  • Ability to commit to intensive service during preparation, travel, and follow up phases of the team’s work.
  • Good communicator; able to motivate, direct and empower others; delegates well.
  • Project management experience.
  • Previous experience as a Site Team member strongly preferred.
  • Completion of the Leadership Development Class preferred.

Additional Responsibilities (With the Site Team Advisor)

  • Build strong commitment between Team members, to serve each other and the Team.
  • Participate in the interview and selection process for team members.
  • Work with the team to write a mission statement and choose a team verse.
  • Coordinate (with members and Collaboratory Staff Logistics Team) logistics for weekly pre-trip chapels (usually 8-10), the pre-trip retreat, and the post-trip celebration/re-entry gathering.
  • Coordinate logistics and expectations with Client personnel in country and at the site.
  • Compile a detailed project schedule with trip goals and milestones (with input from members with direct project responsibility) for the pre-trip, site, and post-trip work of the team; assign responsibilities.
  • Coordinate all trip logistics needs as directed by the Collaboratory Staff Logistics Team.
  • Assign team members to pre-defined administrative responsibilities, distribute job descriptions and training materials, and monitor performance.
  • Organize pre-trip interviews.
  • Help the team and members to work through performance and interpersonal challenges.
  • Coordinate and compile the Team’s Trip Report.
  • Organize a post-trip celebration and re-entry debriefing.

Student Writing Intern

Additional Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Take all work directives from Staff Manager; be responsible for any odd jobs assigned.
  • Works with work studies and is a liaison between student leaders and staff.
  • Attend the Leadership Development Class.
  • Attend the weekly Collaboratory meeting and student Staff meeting thereafter.
  • Work closely with the Publications team and write article(s) that contribute significantly towards the production of the twice annual Dokimoi Ergatai Newsletter.
  • Communicate regularly with Publications Team leader and work towards achieving the overall Publication goals and aims by working along-side the Messiah College Press, in order to publish pamphlets, brochures and periodicals which other Collaboratory teams may require.
  • Be aware of the current Project(s) and communicate with the student Staff Team Manager.
  • Compose the Annual report for 2009-2010

Director of the Collaboratory

The Director is an employee of Messiah College.

Additional Qualifications

  • Experienced in organizational development.
  • Passionate and knowledgeable about cross-cultural missions, service and development work.
  • Capable communicator and educator.
  • Academic credentials and experience in one or more of the SSEH disciplines.
  • Knowledgeable about cross-cultural relationships, service, and travel.
  • Able to organize and lead student teams for work in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Available to schedule up to 5 hours per week in the evening and occasionally on weekends for work with student leaders.

Responsibilities (with the student Director of the Collaboratory)

  • Promote the identity, vision, and mission of the Collaboratory with educators, students, and project and funding partners.
  • Develop and maintain organizational structures, policies and processes that enable the Collaboratory to achieve its mission.
  • Advise faculty members writing Collaboratory-related proposals for grants, scholar chairs, and sabbaticals.
  • Support SSEH Departments and Chairs to connect course-based hands-on learning components to the Collaboratory.
  • Chair Executive Committee meetings.
  • Work through the Operations and Leaders Committees to recommend budget and program decisions to the Executive Committee.
  • Develop and oversee leadership development, project management and discipleship programming of the Collaboratory.
  • Coordinate with College Development and the Office of Foundations and Grants to seek funding for the Collaboratory.

Manager of the Collaboratory

The Manager is an employee of Messiah College.

  • Detail-oriented: able to track, coordinate and prioritize the details of multiple projects; and adjust priorities on short notice.
  • Strong computer skills: good knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project; able to update a web page; basic knowledge of video-editing desirable.

  • Equip and mentor a student Staff Manager to co-lead the Collaboratory Staff, and a student leader for each Staff Team.
  • Lead the Collaboratory Staff to provide public relations, accounting, human resources, information management, discipleship and logistics support to Application Groups.
  • Coordinate working relationships between Collaboratory Staff and campus offices that support Collaboratory programs.
  • Develop, document, and maintain Staff processes, to communicate know-how between generations of students and enable continuous improvement.
  • Organize activities like retreats, seminars, and workshops, for Christian discipleship and to equip student Leaders and Advisors throughout the Collaboratory.
  • Equip and lead cross-cultural project implementation teams; and support other educators as they equip and lead teams.
  • Support the Director of the Collaboratory in developing the organization, programs, project Advisors, and financial resources of the Collaboratory.
  • Coordinate the design of promotional literature and a web page for the Collaboratory.
  • Budget director for the Collaboratory.

Group Advisors

Additional Qualifications

  • Knowledge or commitment to learn project management, and skills for instructing, motivating, directing and empowering others.

Consultant

Additional Qualification

  • Knowledgeable in a field related to work of one or more Groups in the Collaboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Provide contact information and instructions to be shared with student leaders and other advisors in the Collaboratory.
  • Provide consultation services in your area of expertise to project teams when they request help and your schedule permits.


Mentor

Additional Qualification Commitment to use DE discipleship resources and opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Attend an advisor orientation session in the first year of participation.
  • Understand and support in your mentoring the vision, identity, mission and strategy of the Collaboratory.
  • Provide weekly, bi-weekly or monthly 1-on-1 spiritual and/or professional mentoring of one or more students.

Administrative Help

Responsibilities

  • Day-to-day administrative responsibilities include: arrange meetings; print, copy, and scan documents; gather, organize, and record information; make travel arrangements.
  • Learn to articulate the vision, identity, mission of the Collaboratory, and maintain a basic knowledge of current programming; represent the Director to on and off-campus contacts.
  • Special projects, arranged through the Director, to support the Manager of the Collaboratory and the Staff Group.
  • Build relationships with personnel in other campus offices, and learning their processes and how the Collaboratory should work with them.
  • Recognize opportunities to improve office processes in the Collaboratory; work with the Director and Manager to make improvements.

Student Administrative Assistant

Bookkeeper

Additional Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Experience in bookkeeping and/or accounting concepts
  • Understanding of basic mathematical concepts
  • Preferred: Experience with QuickBooks software, or any other double entry accounting software

Responsibilities

  • Learning QuickBooks 2007 software, in addition to familiarization with Collaboratory’s financial and accounting structure
  • Reporting to the Collaboratory Manager, Collaboratory finance team student leader, and Collaboratory finance team advisor on an as-needed basis
  • Coordinate working relationships between the Collaboratory Staff and campus offices that support Collaboratory programs.
  • Enter financial transactions into QuickBooks software throughout the year, on a weekly basis. This data entry process will require ten hours per week. Work hours should be largely be scheduled during the normal work day, although some flexibility will be permitted
  • Facilitate discussion with relevant Messiah College offices on an as needed basis in regard to Collaboratory transactions
  • Document financial processes when needed
