Kenya Water Project
From The Collaboratory
This article describes a future (potential) Energy Group project.
Summary
Harvesters International is a missions organization with a project to assist missions work in Kenya through water management. They have need of people with expertise in using solar energy for water pumping. The Energy Group has this sort of expertise; this could possibly be a future project for the Energy Group.

History
Harvesters International has been working with water in Kenya for some time. According to Charles Richardson, Harvesters has already installed a water management system for the Pokot people in Kenya using a local waterfall as the source. This is called the "Waterfall Project." Additionally, Harvesters has been trying to dig deep wells in areas where drought is causing the shallower wells to dry up. However, the local hand pumps do not work well past about 175 ft, making a powered pump necessary.
Thus far Harvesters have installed two solar water pumping systems. One has not been maintained because of its remote location and lack of security, and the other has possibly had problems with the pump burning out due to the high water temperatures.
Charlie contacted Brad Statnick with an email at Messiah College in order to request help from Dokimoi Ergatai in relation to these solar water pumping projects.
Steve Frank called Ed Hirshman of Harvesters International in October 2006 to request more information on this project. Ed said that the focus right now is providing deep-well water to small schools and mission stations throughout the rift valley in Kenya. This area receives little rain and has been subject to famine conditions for several years. The water would be used by the local people, but only under supervision of pastors, nurses, etc. who are permanant residents at the missions stations. Ed will be contacting Steve further regarding these projects.
