Student wages policy

  1. Purposes of student wages:
    • Recompense students for excellent service above normal volunteer efforts
    • Free up student schedules to allow for more Collaboratory work
    • Ensure completion of critical project work
  2. Current Collaboratory student members:
    • May not be paid for work in which they are simultaneously receiving academic credit.
    • May be paid for work to be completed over any academic break recognized by messiah College.
      • Funding is represented in most recent approved budget. (Note: funding for project work studies may not originate from general Collaboratory fundraising.)
      • The proper application forms are completed.
      • An interview process is completed if there are multiple student applicants for a position.
    • May be paid for work completed while classes are in session (per the academic schedule).
      • Work study position is approved in project proposal and/or project planning article.
      • Funding is represented in most recent approved budget. (Note: funding for project work studies may not originate from general Collaboratory fundraising.)
      • The proper application forms are completed.
      • An interview process is completed if there are multiple student applicants for a position.
  3. Any Collaboratory or non-Collaboratory student
    • May be paid for up to 6 weeks of work at the discretion of the project advisor and leader.
      • The work is a critical need.
      • There are not sufficient volunteer resources to complete the work.
      • To extend the work study position past 6 weeks, the student must join the Collaboratory by committing to attend group meetings if not already doing so. The above requirements for paying a Collaboratory student member must be met.
    • May be paid for Collaboratory work if that work is being outsourced to an outside organization that is in turn employing students.
  4. Student employment situations not covered by this policy are not permitted.
  5. Exceptions to this policy will be decided by the Operations Committee pending receipt of the proper application forms.
