Summary

The Transportation Group is one of several application groups that function within the Collaboratory. The Transportation Group's work focuses primarily on exploring the use of alternative methods of transportation to clients whose purposes align with the Collaboratory's goals. Currently, there are four projects within the Transportation Group: The Solar Commuter Vehicle (SCV), the Basic Utility Vehicle (BUV) Firetruck, and the Kenya Mammography Project (KMP). The SCV is a project to explore the application of electric vehicle technology to the daily commute. The project's current form is an electric motorcycle that features an in-hub brushless DC motor and a powerful lithium-ion battery pack. The LSA is an aircraft built to fit within the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standard for a light-sport aircraft. It has the potential for use on the mission fields in developing countries, where it may be used for medical evacuations and other applications. The LSA will feature folding wings for ease of storage and transportation, Short Take Off and Landing (STOL) capability, and a passenger seat that folds to make room for a stretcher. The BUV is a project to outfit a basic utility vehicle engine with a power take-off in order to run stationary tools. In addition, the project involves designing and developing attachments for common motorcycles to increase functionality. The KMP is a project to outfit a trailer with the technological ability to perform breast cancer screenings in remote areas where such technology is not commonly found. The Transportation Group strives to apply the knowledge learned in the classroom to real world applications.

Mission

The mission of the Transportation Group is to utilize our God-given gifts and abilities to satisfy the transportation needs of those disadvantaged by location and/or economic status. Working with like-minded, need-driven organizations and individuals, we research, design, analyze, and fabricate specialized vehicles and modify existing technologies to meet those needs. We strive to create innovative solutions that use resources wisely and demonstrate the advantages of alternatives to traditional methods of transportation.

Vision

Our vision is to use our talents to develop and adapt technologies to meet the changing transportation needs of people around the world.
