Summary

The Transportation group is an established group and is part of the Collaboratory here at Messiah. The Transportation Group sprung out of the Genesis Solar Racing Team, which was a part of the Department of Engineering at Messiah College between 1993 and 2005. For more than a decade, the Genesis Team raced solar powered vehicles in Sunrayce and the American Solar Challenge events as well as Solar Splash. In the spring of 2006, Genesis entered into a partnership with the Messiah College Flying Club to assist with the Light Sport Aircraft Project. This project was initiated by the Flying Club to create an aircraft design that would be practical and inexpensive on the mission field, taking advantage of the FAA's new Light Sport Aircraft category. In the fall of 2006, Genesis was challenged to work on practical applications of solar powered transportation, beginning with the development of a solar powered commuter vehicle. As the Team moved in this new direction, it was decided that Genesis should evolve to become the Transportation Group within the Collaboratory and join with the Dokomoi Ergatai community.

Mission

The mission of the Transportation group is to utilize our gifts and abilities to study, analyze, design, and fabricate specialized vehicles that fulfill specific transportation needs, especially those of people disadvantaged by location or economic status. We also strive to create vehicles that use resources wisely, to educate the public about the benefits of using alternative energy, and to encourage others to use such vehicles.

Vision

Our vision is to use our talents to develop technologies that meet the changing transportation needs of the world.
