Western Asia Project

Summary

The team currently consists of three members: Chris Burd, Robert Effinger, and David Irvin. The removal of arsenic from drinking water was the starting point for the Western Asia team. This team will be continuing arsenic filtration for Asian countries, but will expand to other methods of filtration and the cleaning of water from multiple contaminants that make the water for the people living in these countries unusable, such as dishwashing and cleaning, and undrinkable.

Purpose statement

The purpose of the Western Asia team is to provide clean, drinkable water to the people who live in the countries of western Asia, including the countries of Nepal, Bangladesh, and India. Education and implementation of appropriate technologies to the local people in their culture are important instruments to help achieve pure water.

Goals

  • Fall 2006 - Spring 2007
    • Recruitment of 2, possibly 3 members
    • Research of other problems with the drinking water (besides arsenic)
    • Gain a contact for clientele in western Asia and/or possible future trips

History

The Western Asia team is a recently renamed team starting in the fall of 2005. The team started in the fall of 2004 with the introduction of the Integrated Projects Curriculum (IPC) which the project in the classroom was used to produce results for the Water Purification group in Dokomoi Ergatai (DE). The project for the IPC was the removal of a set amount of arsenic in distilled water using everyday supplies.
After the class finished at the end of the semester, the team in the IPC program moved to Water Purification in the spring of 2005 and worked on ways to remove arsenic from drinking water. Near the end of the spring semester of 2005, the opportunity to participate in the Grainger Challenge, a challenge presented by the National Academy of Engineers, was presented to the team. The purpose of this challenge was to develop an appropriate technology for the filtration of arsenic with the planned implementation in Bangladesh. With this new goal of participating in the Grainger Challenge, the team decided to change the name of working just on arsenic filtration to Western Asia.
Unfortunately, the challenge fell through and we did not get the chance to continue participation in the challenge. However, the team completed two self-contained filtration units for the purpose of arsenic removal.
